MEET OUR FOUNDER AND ORAL HISTORIAN
Hi! My name is Rachel Amburose, but you can call me Rose. I’m a current high school senior (class of 2021) from a rural public high school in North Carolina. I’m passionate about historical research, political campaigns/advocacy, and education policy. I aspire to major in history and political science at the undergraduate level and eventually attend law school. I like to spend my free time gardening, cooking, or pretending to hate my dog to see his reaction (he loves me; don’t worry).

WHY I BEGAN PROJECT PERSES
I initiated Project Perses to share the stories of students like me. As a senior, applying to college has been one of the hardest endeavors I’ve even undertaken. As a first-generation international applicant, I had to figure out much of the process myself. I’m also low-income and a survivor of abuse and translating these extenuating circumstances into my application was quite the challenge. Applying to college this year, amidst these major changes, was overwhelming and I quickly realized that other applicants felt the same way. While major news outlets and university presses highlight the historical statistics of this admissions cycle, I realized that students’ voices were largely restricted to internet forums and conversations with family. Therefore, I wanted to provide an official platform to highlight seniors’ experiences in a meaningful way and thus, Project Perses was born.
MY EXPERTISE IN HISTORICAL RESEARCH
In 2020, I conducted original historical research on the Carolina Gay Association. My museum exhibit won first place at the National History Day (NHD) competition. For this project, I reviewed three decades worth of two specific newspapers, The Daily Tar Heel and Lambda, and analyzed archives at various Southern universities. I also studied over twenty oral histories and made a few of my own with primary sources and experts. If you are interested in learning more about the Carolina Gay Association, my project’s title is “Light, Liberty, and Pride: LGBTQ Activism at UNC-CH.” My annotated bibliography, process paper, and exhibit images are available online on the NHD website.
